Flow state, or flow, is when you are simultaneously relaxed and focused. It is a mental and physical state many describe as “in the zone.” In flow, you are completely engaged with the activity at hand and the activity is rewarding in and of itself.

The concept of flow was coined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a proponent leader in the field of positive psychology, which emphasizes that tasks are challenging but not too difficult that they cannot be completed. The result is a pleasurable experience that requires effort, persistence, and investment to achieve progress.

How Does a Writer Benefit from Achieving Flow States?

It's that magical moment when words seem to flow effortlessly from your fingertips, and you become completely absorbed in the writing process. However, there are some tips and techniques that can help you get into a state of flow more easily.

Set a Specific Time and Place for Creativity

One of the keys to getting into a state of flow is having a dedicated time and place for writing. This can help create a routine and eliminate distractions.

For example, you might decide to write for an hour every morning in your home office. By setting aside this time and space, you're signaling to your brain that it's time to focus on writing.

Ensure you have have a clear, open area to write. Your environment is often a reflection of, and direct influence on our state of mind. A cluttered room is a cluttered mind. Take a moment to clean your work station, whether it's your home office, studio, or desk.

Practice Free Writing

Sometimes, the best way to get into a state of flow is to just start writing. Set a timer for a specific amount of time (e.g., 10 minutes) and write non-stop for that period. Don't worry about grammar or punctuation, just write whatever comes to mind. This can help you bypass your inner critic and get your creative juices flowing.

Taking this further, if you're struggling to get in the groove of your writing session, try writing about the first thing that comes to mind. It could be a childhood memory, a recent conversation you had, or a dream you had last night.

Alternatively, you could use a writing prompt such as writing about an object in your surrounding environment, or picking a random word in the dictionary as inspiration to write.

The goal is to keep writing without stopping until the timer goes off.

Use Ambient Noise or Instrumental Music

Playing environmental sounds (e.g., rain, waves, or burning firewood) can help create a calming atmosphere and block out distractions. The use of ambient noise (e.g., binaural beats, or brown noise) are quite popular as the overall sounds are less distracting for many who want maximize their surrounding silence. This can help you get into a state of flow by reducing stress and increasing focus.

If you find silence too distracting, then you can also experiment with instrumental music. People find that certain genres of music, such as classical, jazz, or lo-fi are particularly helpful for getting into a state of flow.

YouTube is an excellent resource for stimulating and calming instrumental music to play in the background while writing.
